Day 1 Notes: September 20, 2017

Hello! Here's what we're up to today:

English 10-1

a. Quiz on "Test"
b. Think Pair Share: What did you think of the story? Think of your response first, then share and provide support. Summarize either the similarity or the difference to the class.
c. Themes are:

- A message about life from the story.
- Observational, not prescriptive (there is no "should" in a theme)
- A full sentence (tip: "Sometimes, ________ can __________________)
- Good to help create a strong thesis
- An essential part of literary analysis (see question 13 on the provincial exam)

d. Activity on theme
e. Characterization is:

- Indirect presentation of a character
- What do a character's appearance, actions, and speech tell us about who they are? (Tip: "This tells us that they are _____________ because ____________________")
- Helpful to analyse characters

f. Short Story analysis worksheet. Complete before next class. You are encouraged to complete the relevant sections of your literary terms sheet.

- The extra question: "How does this story connect to your own life?"

g. Read The Raven story before next class.
