Sept. 13, 2018

Hello!

Here's what we're up to today:

English 11

1. Checking in
2. Recap of literary terms
3. New literary terms

- Quatrain - a four line poem that has a rhyme scheme.
- Rhyme Scheme - The pattern of rhyming words (at the end of each line) throughout a poem (ABCB, ABAB, etc)
- Free Verse - A poem without a rhythm or rhyme structure

4. Project 1 details
5. Discussion:

- How do you feel about poetry?
- At what age should someone be considered fully independent?

6. How to read poetry ("Warren Pryor")

- Read it once out loud. Don't worry about understanding it. Offer a first reaction (opinion, question, insight)
- Read it a second time quietly. Look to summarize, note difficult terms, find literary terms, note turning points and structure, ask questions.
- Check the question for the assignment. In this case, it's: How does this poem connect to your life?
- Read it a third time, out loud. Write a possible theme. Offer your first response to the question.

7. For next class, read the short story "There Will Come Soft Rains"
